Sermon for Pentecost Sunday
May 11, 2008
John 20:23
Today, Todd spoke about how risky it is to recognize that we are forgiven. It is easy to intellectually grasp that we are forgiven, he said; but to truly know that we are forgiven is risky. To truly know that we are forgiven is risky because it means that we must give up our myth of self-sufficiency. We all like to think that we are in control, that we can go it on our own. Being forgiven means recognizing that we depend on Christ, that we cannot make it on our own, that “we have been bought with a price,” as Paul put it. Todd spoke about the Pentecost symbol of wind and fire and how volatile the combination of the two is – consider forest fires in southern California. He closed with telling us about the line from Beavis and Butthead (of MTV fame) when they were playing with matches: “Fire’s Cool. Yeah, safety sucks!” He invited us to play with the “matches” of forgiveness and to see what might get set on fire.
